Extractions

Dental extractions are sometimes unavoidable due to periodontal disease or complete breakdown of the tooth making it unviable to restore. Sometimes, extractions are performed due to financial constraints as alternative treatments such as root canal therapy and/or crowns are beyond the individual’s means.

It should be noted that while most extractions are routine, some can become complicated and need more involved surgery. Sometimes, this only becomes apparent at the time of the extraction. In the majority of cases, Dr Coumbis will still be able to proceed with the extraction.

Referrals to oral and maxillo-facial surgeons are often required for wisdom tooth removal, especially if the roots of the teeth are close to the nerve supplying the jaw bone. This is to minimise the risk of damage to the nerve and subsequent numbness which could be permanent. Each case will need to be evaluated individually and Dr Coumbis will advise you accordingly.
Peregian Beach Dental has brochures that are available on request to help explain the above in more detail.
